Depending on the time of day and traffic, you will be travelling by car for one and a half to two hours. What does Ayurveda mean?

The word Ayurveda comes from Sanskrit. It is made up of the word ‘Ayus’, meaning life, and ‘Veda’, meaning knowledge. Ayurveda literally means ‘the knowledge of life‘. Ayurveda originates from India and is more than 5000 years old. The aim of Ayurvedic medicine is to harmonise body, mind and soul and promote a long and healthy life.

Where is the Ayurveda Centre in Sandaru Lanka located?

Our Ayurveda centre or treatment centre is located directly on the property and is just a few steps away from your accommodation. You will find your treatment room in a former residential building that we have renovated for you. It is located in the immediate vicinity of the neighbouring residential buildings in Maggona. Your therapist will give you a warm welcome there.

What are the special features of an Ayurveda resort?

Those taking an Ayurveda treatment enjoy intensive massages with herbal oils. This oil remains on the skin. If Shirodara is on the treatment plan, this means that the oil remains on the head during the forehead oil infusions, which often last several days. We consider ourselves lucky that our guests actively help to keep Sandaru Lanka in a well-kept condition. This means that they avoid walking over the carpets with oily feet. They move the Roman blinds with clean hands and only use the side-mounted ribbons to darken or raise the curtains. If they have oily hair, they wear a headscarf and cover their pillows with a towel. They soap themselves and wash all the oil out of their hair before rubbing themselves dry with towels. We are very grateful for this – also on behalf of all the people who love Sandaru Lanka and come here to enjoy this magical place of power time and time again. It is also typical of an Ayurveda resort that guests only drink hot water, herbal teas and fresh fruit juices without sugar and ice.

What is important to know about the beach?

The beach directly adjacent to Sandaru Lanka is called Uswella Beach. The special thing about this beach is its unspoilt nature. Mass tourism is far away. Here and there you will come across fishermen or wild dogs. From time to time, other tourists or locals stroll along the beach or sit on the rocks. We do everything we can to keep this beach as beautiful and unspoilt as it is. This also includes clearing away any plastic that is washed up by the sea. There are no beach boys here who harass tourists and want to do business. To keep this special beach as beautiful as it is, our friendly request to you: if someone approaches you and tries to beg, don’t give them anything. Say no in a friendly manner and move on.

How far is it to the beach?

Sandaru Lanka is right by the sea. There are two access points to the beach from our property. Facing the sea, the left-hand gate leads you to the long sandy beach, which invites you to go for a walk. Fishermen work there and wild dogs feel at home. The gate on the right leads you to a small bay. You can relax there and swim when the sea is calm. Directly in front of Sandaru Lanka, also rock formations create pools that invite locals and tourists to take a dip.

You will also have the opportunity to ask questions and we will translate for you.

Is it possible to buy clothes locally?

In Aluthgama, Beruwala, Bentota or Kalutara there are clothing shops with beach dresses, T-shirts, shirts, sarongs or flip-flops. There are also some tailor shops in our neighbourhood that are very popular. We recommend: bring a favourite item of clothing with you. The tailor will then make an expert copy and there is a good chance that you will enjoy your customised item from Sri Lanka for a long time.

What clothing is recommended and appropriate in Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka has a tropical climate. Temperatures are regularly between 28 and 32 degrees Celsius – apart from the mountains in the north of the island, where it can be cooler. Clothes made of light cotton are comfortable to wear. Casual clothing is the best way to dress for Sandaru Lanka. When visiting temples, religious sites or meeting with monks, respect dictates that shoulders and knees should be covered – but not you head. It is also not customary to walk along the beach in very skimpy bikinis. Topless is taboo in Sri Lanka. The local women go into the sea covered. We see it as an expression of our appreciation and solidarity with the locals to respect the ethics of the country.

When does the medical consultation take place and how does it work?

At the beginning of your Ayurveda treatment, our Ayurveda doctor will take time for you. He carries out a pulse diagnosis, looks at your eyes, skin or tongue and talks to you. In this way, he determines your constitutional type according to Ayurvedic teachings: Pitta (fire and water), Vata (air and ether) or Kapha (earth and water). Most people have a mixture of two so-called doshas. Based on this consultation, the doctor will draw up and discuss your treatment plan with you. Your doctor will be there for you throughout your treatment. He will prescribe treatments to balance your doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) and strengthen your health.

He studied Ayurveda medicine at the Malewana Sri Gnanissara Ayurveda Medical College Sabhawa and qualified as an acupuncturist at the International College of Acupuncture at the Institute of Acupuncture. Pets are not allowed at Sandaru Lanka. Our guests are requested to leave their dogs at home. The hygiene standards at our Ayurveda resort support the idea of it being exclusively for humans. Even those who book accommodation and full board Ayurvedic meals come into contact with themselves and their own needs at this place of strength. Additionally, Sri Lanka has many stray dogs. The culture of keeping pets as we do in Europe is unfamiliar to locals.

What can I do as a guest to contribute to environmental protection?

Our guests keep asking us: what can we do to help Sandaru Lanka protect the environment at this uniquely situated resort? We are very happy about this. Because we are convinced that only together can we live sustainably and make this earth a clean place. Use your towels several times as long as they are clean and fresh. Towels on the floor are a signal to our room service: please wash them and put fresh towels in the bathroom. We also regularly clean Uswella Beach of plastic items washed up by the sea. Many guests help out and occasionally take rice bags with them on their beach walks to collect plastic. In this way, we are helping to protect nature and people together. And we are sending out an important signal.

I would like to get to know the country and its people. What excursions can I do from Sandaru Lanka?

Why does Sandaru Lanka focus kindness as a value to make this special place a refugium for guests?

We cultivate hospitality in the true sense of the word. We regard our guests as our friends. It is very important to us that you feel completely welcome and comfortable. Friendliness is good for you. Many people who come here from work to find peace and quiet really manage to this. In the business world, consciously friendly interaction often falls by the wayside in the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Although people naturally treat each other with respect, they are not always present and attentive when it comes to sincerely perceiving the other person. Self-care and self-love are also important qualities in this day and age. Those who are treated kindly also treat themselves, their fellow human beings and nature more kindly. This is existential for us. Because we believe that if we are all kinder, we will transform our world into a kinder place.

Is there a pool? Where can I swim?

A natural pond or lagoon that we integrate into the property would be a dream for us. We run Sandaru Lanka according to sustainable criteria, as plastic-free as possible, and attach great importance to our garden. We carry this vision in our hearts. Once again, we believe that the best solution for us will emerge when the time is right. Directly in front of the property you will find rock formations in the sea. Pools form there, inviting you to take a dip. Please be careful if you go directly into the sea. The waves are strong. In the small bay some people swim when the sea is very calm. Also for your information: traditional Ayurveda avoids direct wind in order not to increase Vata, the air element, and to keep the doshas in balance. If you have been treated with oil, doctors advise against swimming in direct sunlight or chlorinated water.

How do I prepare for an Ayurvedic cure?

Savor the anticipation of your Ayurveda vacation. Try to slow down the pace of your daily life as much as possible in the days leading up to your trip. This gradually prepares your body for this special time out. Starting a week before the Panchakarma treatment, refrain from consuming coffee, alcohol, refined sugar, and white flour—or eliminate parts of them from your diet and drinking habits. This will lead to a stronger and faster detox effect. Bring uplifting and relaxing literature with you. And if you have specific health-related questions, bring along anything that concerns you. If you have medical reports or laboratory results, pack this information for your Ayurvedic doctor. If you want to consciously leave behind burdensome things: write everything down by hand on a piece of paper. Let it flow and ceremoniously rid yourself of this record afterwards. Whatever feels right: crumpling it up, burning it, flushing it away, or burying it in the garden enhances the feeling of relieving yourself of mental baggage.

Ayurveda is an experiential medicine. There are occasional scientific studies on its effects, but they are too few to make conclusive statements. Many guests report benefiting from the treatments for several months after their Ayurveda stay and feeling overall better. For us, Ayurveda is a soothing gift that gently counters the turbulent everyday life with a lasting sign and gives attention to the human and their health that they deserve.

During your Ayurveda treatment, your therapists will pamper you with warm herbal oil massages. We recommend: bring old briefs with you, which you can then dispose of, or cover up with disposable paper underwear. When you enjoy your forehead oil massage, the oil usually remains in your hair for two, three or more days. This depends on how long you have been curing and what your doctor recommends. Immediately after the treatment, you will be given a scarf to wear like a turban to protect your head. This is because you will be a little more sensitive. You are welcome to bring your own older scarf. Many guests feel more comfortable doing that. You will go to your treatment in a sarong, which we will give you. A sarong is a wrap-around skirt. It consists of a length of fabric that women wrap over their chest and men wrap around their hips. Otherwise you are best equipped with cotton clothing and flip-flops. And we recommend packing a tongue cleaner. In Ayurveda, the tongue is considered an extension of the gastrointestinal tract. Removing deposits on the tongue helps the body to detoxify and strengthens the sense of taste.

Which treatments are part of the traditional Ayurveda treatment?

The traditional Ayurveda treatment is a panchakarma treatment. The basis of this treatment is detoxification and cleansing. Ayurveda doctors recommend a traditional Panchakarma treatment lasting three to four weeks. The treatment starts with oil massages on the head, feet and the whole body. Colon cleansing, nasal cleansing, oil enemas, acupuncture and a steam bath complete the treatments. Herbal medicine complements the therapy. The doctor will discuss the treatments with you and answer any questions you may have. Many of our guests stay for a fortnight. On their return, they follow the doctor’s recommendations and give up alcohol, coffee and sugar, for example, in order to prolong their cure, as it were.

Over the next few days – depending on the duration of the treatment and your constitution – nasal cleansing, oil enemas, a Shirodara forehead oil infusion and steam bath follow.
